Thrift Shopping
When it comes to thrift shopping, I must say I am a convert. During the time when everybody was rummaging through piles and piles of clothes in markets and sidewalks around the Philippines, I was somewhere else. I couldn’t care less. Then.
When I started working with my current company, I realized the joy and the not-so-nice side of thrift shopping. I had the chance to go thrift shopping with some of the people at work and was so amazed at how well they can find good pieces and paying only a thousand for about 20 clothes! Although, during that time I was very hesitant. I didn’t bother to look at the racks and piles of clothes. I was too engrossed with the smell, the heat, and the dust, that all I wanted to do was go home. But then, I didn’t. I was curious.
It took months though before I finally braved the Ukay- ukay stores along Osmeňa Blvd. I wasn’t disappointed. The shopping fairies helped me find interesting pieces. And the rest is history.
I even encountered some great blogs that talk about the ukay adventures of the authors. One in particular is Ukay Manila. There’s also Ukay Queen and myukayukay.com.
Yesterday, A and I decided to go to the next city to look for bags. There’s this one warehouse that supposedly sells loads of surplus bags. But since everyday is not a lucky day when doing thrift shopping, I didn’t find any bag worth my peso.
Still, I didn’t stop there. I was determined to find something, anything worth the long trip. So after more than 10 ukay- ukay stores, here’s what I got:
